Our bodies as well as every other living being (organism) are composed of tiny individual compartments called cells, separated from each other by layers of fat, and at the heart of each cell in every organism1 lies its DNA, which defines it almost completely. DNA has four building blocks, called bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). Millions to billions of these bases are arranged in a sequence in two long strings in each cell, and each pair of strings is identical in each cell inside the same organism. There is an extremely simple rule for how the two strings relate to each other in a cell: an A on string no. 1 will always face a T on string no. 2, and G will always face C, no exceptions. If you have an A facing a G or a C, for example, that is necessarily damage to the cell.

An organism is built of cells, every cell holds the same DNA, and in DNA A always faces T, G always faces C.

The sequence of DNA bases is identical between cells from the same organism, meaning that if you took a cell from your skin and a cell from your bone and compared the DNA sequence in each, they would be identical. Every person, every cockroach, every tree, and every microbe has its own DNA sequence, identical in all its cells but different than the sequences of other organisms. That is the organism’s genetic sequence—its biological essence. Change the genetic sequence by a little, and you usually change the organism’s essence by a little; change it enormously, and you have a different creature. For instance, two different people have very similar genetic sequences, while a mushroom and a mosquito hugely differ in their sequences.

Sequences are identical within the same organism, nearly identical between two people, and unrelated between distant creatures.

How does DNA determine what we are? The sequences every creature holds are essentially instruction manuals; you can think of the letters A, C, T, and G as an alphabet spelling out blueprints for various machines made of proteins. Each protein machine (enzyme) has a different purpose: build this, move that, disassemble these (when we eat protein, our digestive tract breaks it down into the amino acids that compose it, which is why the terms protein and amino acids are used almost interchangeably in nutrition). Organisms are different from one another, because each has a different genetic sequence holding designs for different machines acting on the world in different ways. I won’t get into the precise mechanism of how DNA encodes proteins and will only note that DNA is too precious to be exposed to the dangerous outside world, so cells use an intermediary called RNA to copy the blueprints from the strings of DNA and carry these copies to the industrial plants that produce proteins, called ribosomes.

The DNA blueprint stays behind while RNA carries a copy out to the ribosome, which assembles the protein machine (enzyme) from amino acids.

In general, cells protect their own DNA at all costs, because it has no backup—once a piece is broken beyond repair, it and the machine it encodes are lost forever. However, if we know what machine a certain genetic sequence is the blueprint for, and if we know what the machine does and how it’s assembled, we can tinker with the sequence to tinker with the machine. Since a single sequence is read many times to produce many copies of the same machine, this is much more efficient than tuning the machines themselves. We edit the sequence for the same reason we change the design of a car, rather than recall all cars of the same make and model every time. So, when a geneticist comes up with a way of genetically modifying an organism, this is pretty much what is meant by it. We detect a weak point in a tomato’s immune system that makes it more vulnerable to viruses and reinforce it by adjusting the design for a machine that erects the walls meant to stop viruses. Or, we might put the machinery that produces starch in rice grains into overdrive to make the grains fatter and tastier.

Edit the sequence and every machine built from it afterwards is built to the new design.

All that’s meant by “genetically modified organism” is giving an organism a tiny nudge toward a track we like a little better than the one it’s currently on. There’s nothing surreptitious about it, and it does not add anything to the contents of the modified organism besides what we control. Once you chew and swallow the genetically modified organism, your body breaks it down the same way it does an unmodified one, that is, entirely. Options that don’t include genetic modification normally include tools like pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. These have much more unpredictable effects on the crop or livestock, not to mention the people who eat them. You could forgo all of the above if you feel that’s safer, but that comes at a much higher cost for you. There’s simply no way to grow many tons of crops, all of them at a high quality, without fear of disease or pests, and sell them at the same price as crops that were treated in a manner that makes growing them smoother.

I think the reason why many people prefer organic food is that they feel there is some sort of occult manipulation taking place behind the scenes before the food they’ll ingest reaches their plate. I understand this suspicion, since many practices of arguable benefit have been common in the past and still are—antibiotic overuse in feedlots is a familiar example. In reality, genetically modifying organisms is most likely the cleanest choice we have for improving livestock and cultivars (I’m also a fan of biological pest control), as it allows us to make pinpoint edits to blueprints for the exact machine we want to change while touching nothing else, and without leaving any chemicals inside the plant or animal. If you are willing to eat asparagus that was treated with hormones on an industrial farm, buying genetically modified asparagus is much easier to justify.

I might plan a meeting or a trip to a conference, catching up with material my AI agent has spit out for me, and texting one of my employees. I’ll stare at the black-and-orange Claude interface, alt-tab to WhatsApp to type something out at the speed of light, and already start considering how I might knock some items off my to-do list in the minutes before disembarking, to appear to the CEO like I’m efficient (you’ve all done it). I’ll then jam my laptop, its unwieldy charger, and its mouse into my backpack before hopping off the car. Most everyone else around me will either be doing the same, or they’ll stare at their phone screens with a bored look.

On the other hand, I might open a philosophical treatise in Ancient Greek and spend an entire hour getting through three pages. I’ll look at the squiggly line (tilde) above a vowel and hear its melody playing in my head. I’ll connect this melody with the rest of the sounds and start seeing wise, bearded men, maybe too smart for their own good, before my mind’s eye. I’ll be transported to the distant past and have a giddy sensation as some of humanity’s oldest wisdom materializes before me among jugs of wine, togas, marble columns, figs, and cheese. A classicist who reads the above description will be shocked at the inaccurate details, but that’s not the point; the point is that beautiful things move you, they stir emotions, facts be damned. One option, the one happening on my laptop, is rapid-fire and mechanical. A machine (Claude) could literally do it. The second is pleasant and vivid.

I’ve tried getting into meditation a few times and failed badly in every attempt—I simply cannot concentrate on nothing for even five minutes—but I remember one exercise that was very instructive among my many unfruitful ones. As I was pacing around my house counting steps, I suddenly realized how active my brain was, optimizing things. I was weighing this and considering that, all the while in mental overdrive. It’s a perfect zone to be in when you’re facing real, serious problems that are actually in your power to control, but worrying about the future without respite is no way to live. I feel experiences I love for their own sake are the remedy for this slow-and-certain burnout. They immerse me in the moment, and though time doesn’t slow down, whatever a romantic might say, my experience of it certainly does. Precisely because I mentioned Ancient Greek, I want to describe this feeling of being completely absorbed by the most distant experience imaginable from reading Plato, a football match, to show that you can be in the moment in any number of ways.

Some football games are snoozefests of a sort much worse than what meditation is to me. But, when the stakes are high and the air in the stands surges hot into the pitch, all I feel is the volatile concoction in my heart ready to erupt in joy; or sorrow; or anger, made even more unstable by not knowing which of these it’ll be. When everyone in the stands feels the same, talks the same, and wears the same battledress, it creates a sense of community that amplifies my feelings and sucks me in so that nothing else matters to me for ninety minutes (plus stoppage time). I think the best demonstration I can think of for how deeply you can be absorbed in a match (and for how beautiful the highest and lowest moments in football are), is that the only memory I have of a match that’s stronger than the memory of the match itself comes from a time I was in love. Consummate emotion is often a better reason to wake up in the morning than a hundred nagging tasks.

It’s inevitable that we take care of our affairs. To do otherwise, to never apply ourselves to material concerns, would turn us into peculiar and idle types, as well as unreliable to the people we love. Yet once my duty to the material is complete, my imagination takes me elsewhere. Although my fantasies may be exaggerating, they tell me I would happily ruin my knees forever to parry a critical penalty for my team (Maccabi), and that I would gladly swallow poison for a tenth of Socrates’ intellectual contribution to mankind. In the blink of an eye, I would be fulfilled in realms that mean much more to the world than my immediate problems.

Business Values

High-tech has become a culture that flattens the difference between profitable and beneficent.

I am very much of the business world, in the sense that we consider “business” to mean people who dress elegantly, board airplanes with only carry-on trolleys, and use acronyms no one around them has heard of. Although my training is scientific, I was raised by two parents who ran large, successful businesses themselves, and many of my friends and family are very nearly the textbook example of businesspeople. But I also have quite strong ethical inclinations that run counter to the no-nonsense attitude of a modern organization, meaning I can’t help but be frustrated by the amorality of modern businesses.

All businesses are owned, operated, and managed by people who, being human beings, have moral obligations toward others. Some mega-conglomerates adopt an outright offensive, openly malevolent attitude toward their customers, employees, and anyone else affected by them, maintaining a legalistic position whereby they’re only obliged to benefit their board (disguised as shareholders); such organizations mistreat people in ways that would border on self-satire if they weren’t so depressing1. These are low-hanging fruit, however, so I’ll set them aside. Instead, I want to touch upon the ethical choices of well-meaning companies, which they mistakenly call values, since confusion here is pervasive.

I recently ran into a typical example on LinkedIn (where else?), in a post where an executive I won’t name complained that modern businesses had lost their values, then proceeded to suggest his own: excellence, teamwork, innovation, diversity. Nothing about the post suggests he was being dishonest, but if you consciously grapple with moral questions yourself during your day-to-day, the problem here is obvious—his substitute is a non sequitur. Excellence, teamwork, and innovation (we’ll come back to diversity) aren’t values at all, they’re MOs, a way to maximize profit. For instance, we can assume that when the executive I mentioned included innovation in the list, he meant products that would be technologically or conceptually advanced so that they would simply sell better, or for a higher price. Innovation here is a way to deliver the most profitable product, rather than it being an educational goal for the good of the company’s junior employees.

One could respond by saying that by innovation he meant developing those junior employees so that they’ll be more productive for the company in the future. However, if an employee is trained with his productivity being the only goal, this cannot be called a value, because values are precisely the ideas we commit to without an eye to material gain. Innovation as a value would mean training employees to develop, and to come up with, the most unexpected and exotic ideas, period. Money could only be a secondary concern in that scenario.

Teamwork and excellence are much the same as innovation in this respect. If innovation asks: “How can we develop the most profitable product?” then teamwork and excellence simply ask: “How can we employ our people in the way that’s the most profitable for us?” Innovation, teamwork, and excellence all ask about value for the business, rather than about the values of the business.

We are left with diversity. This is a fraught topic, and my answer here isn’t as clear-cut. First, I believe that nowadays any company that proclaims diversity one of its guiding values warrants some suspicion. Companies have been known to roll back their DEI policies, reintroduce them, then scrap them again according to marketing needs and whoever happened to be residing in the White House. Second, diversity hires necessarily mean hiring someone who is less qualified over someone who is more so. If we trust that a candidate obtained their qualifications fairly, refusing to hire them in order to fill a diversity quota (itself a grotesque term) means harming them for a reason that is certainly contestable, if not questionable. On the flip side, if one assumes minorities need preferential treatment to be hired for a position for which they would otherwise be rejected, then that is a sign of a patronizing and condescending attitude toward them. However, if a business is earnest in its attempts to promote minorities, and if in addition its executives honestly believe that diversity hires are ethical despite their implications, I concede this is a value in the moral sense of the word.

So far, I have discussed things that look like values in the moral sense of the word, but in fact aren’t that at all, while conceding that diversity could be such a value in the right circumstances. I have tried to come up with more defensible examples of values instructing business behavior, but I’m honestly stumped2. AI companies have recently suggested we put some vaguely defined brakes on AI development, but their argument is that we should do this to stop AI from ending humanity3. “Don’t wipe humanity off the face of the earth” is a very low ethical bar to clear. In my own personal experience getting a PhD in biology, I can say that scientists who research subjects with clear ethical implications (like genetic engineering in people) will often mention these problems, but will never expound them, let alone allow such considerations to figure into their research.

Say tomorrow a company finds a practical way to cure Down’s Syndrome in the womb, should we even let it? How much should the treatment be commercialized, and who should bear most of the cost? What bothers me most deeply when I ask myself such questions isn’t so much that a modern business’s default mode is amoral, as that we got to a point where an amoral attitude isn’t only taken for granted but is apparently acceptable and even desirable. I have attended many lectures, conferences, business meetings, and the like during my life. The people in these gatherings profoundly understand their field and mutually enrich each other to advance it. Even if the situation demands that we wear a sort of mask to enter, we still take our human responsibilities with us into meeting rooms and conference halls.

This girl who just dumped him is far more beautiful than the previous one. So fine, it’s still not where he wants to be, but this is an upward trajectory. Tom has a full life too: an easy job, a degree underway, all a man needs, really. He plays happier music than usual on his phone to balance his emotions—in his way, he has always been good at managing the atmosphere. He phones Beckie, his only close friend.

“I don’t get it, they are so into me one second, then let me go in the next.”

“You sound angry.”

“I’m not angry, I just don’t get it.”

He can hear the concern in her voice, but he knows he’s going to be alright, because he always is. No one is in better control of their emotions than him, and he knows it is one of his best qualities. He’s seen how erratic people get when they act irrationally. He starts up League of Legends, and tells himself next time he finds a date on Tinder, he’ll keep her just fine. When the game loads he notices his lower lip is a little sore—he has been biting on it during matches. It’s a hard habit to kick. He wonders for a moment if there is something he could play that doesn’t make him so tense and realizes it is probably time to eat dinner. His roommate, Liz, comes into the kitchen as he is sitting at the table eating pasta. She always comes back to the apartment long after the workday is over, and he wishes he knew how she finds so many things to do.

“How have you been?” she asks.

“Pretty good. My boss has been pretty happy with my work.”

“That’s good.”

She pauses for a second.

“I was out with this guy tonight,” she says. “He’s kind of cute.”

“Oh, nice.”

“Yeah.”

“How’d you meet him?”

“At a friend’s place. We’ve hung out a couple of times.”

He nods. “Hope it works out.”

She smiles at him coyly, and he looks down at his food.

“I should probably get to bed soon,” he says. “Lotta work tomorrow.”

“Sure. Night.”

“Night.”

He goes back to his room, stuffs his clothes into the laundry pile, and plays some more League of Legends. He jerks off, brushes his teeth, and goes to bed. His other roommate, Ryan, has just come back to the apartment with his girlfriend. Since Tom can only hear some murmuring and the creak of a door opening, he can pretend she’s someone else, like a male friend. Just to be sure he doesn’t hear anything he doesn’t want to, he starts the fan in his room to mask any sounds. The next day, he gets a call from his mother:

“Hi, Mom, what’s up?”

“I’m good, honey, how are you?”

“I’m fine.”

“Good, ummm… I need you to come over this week and help take the folding chairs down to the storage room, is that alright?”

“Sure, Mom, is Tuesday evening good?”

“Of course. Thanks, honey.”

“See you, Mom.”

Nothing makes him regret ever being born more than traffic jams; he curses at nothing and swears this is the last time he goes to visit his mom during rush hour. He lets his arm hang in front of the AC vent to cool down, in such a way that the cold air slips under it and into his armpit. “Jesus,” he thinks to himself, “calm down, who cares if it takes another twenty minutes.” A Kia cuts the queue right in front of him. “Goddamn son of a bitch!” He arrives at the threshold livid, and the door opens. Messi, a beautiful collie Tom has had since he was a puppy, walks into his open arms and licks his eyes and lips when he kneels down to pet him. It’s disgusting, but he can’t help giggling every time Messi does it.

“Hi, Mom! Hi, Messi!”

“He’s been waiting at the door for about ten minutes. I swear he can feel it when you’re about to visit.”

There used to be a time when Tom would wrestle with Messi, but he is over eleven now, with frizzy fur, gray hair around his muzzle and over his back and tail, and has trouble even getting up from the floor to go on walks. He scratches Messi behind his ears, then gets up to sit at the kitchen table. Messi limps by Tom’s side and lies down to rest on the floor next to him, letting out a tired grunt. His mom goes back to dicing vegetables.

“I’m making salad and eggs. How have you been?”

“I’m good, Mom.”

“Are you doing fine money-wise, need any help from me and Dad?”

“No thanks, I don’t spend much apart from rent and car maintenance.”

“Spend it going out to eat with friends.”

“I do, Mom.”

She starts cutting the cucumbers.

“How is work going?”

“Good. My boss has been pretty happy with my work.”

“Is that all?”

“I’m doing well at work. I’ll get my degree no problem. What else could I want?”

“If I had your brains I would be aiming for a Nobel Prize.”

“Well, I’m not you. What would I need a Nobel Prize for, anyway? Way too much of a headache.”

He twiddles his fingers and stretches in his chair.

“So, have you thought about what you’re going to do with your degree once you finish?”

He smothers a sigh inside his mouth, right before it escapes.

“Yeah, you said you needed help with those chairs, right?”

“Yes. You know where the key to the storage room is, right?”

“Yup. I’ll get right on it.”

“Put the key back where you took it from, so I don’t lose it.”

The storage room is always dusty and he always comes back from it all clammy. “Whatever, better me than Mom having to do it.” He looks around and sees the bookcase with all his old books from when he was a clever student in school. They remind him he’s always been smart, and that nothing has changed since then, that he’s on the same track to a bright future. Maybe he should take one of these books back with him, The Lord of the Rings maybe? The floor is littered with dusty toys and old furniture, none of it the right way up. He reaches over the mess on the floor to try and grab the book, and the tip of his finger brushes against it. He tries, but he can’t quite close his hand around the book. The dust is getting oppressive, and he has sweat stains all over. “Whatever, The Lord of the Rings can stay there.”

He finds Messi at the door and his salad ready when he returns. He gives Messi a hug and tastes the olive oil, tomato, and lemon juice all mixed together. It feels like home.

“Have you met anyone new at university?”

Mom is frying eggs now.

“Yeah, you know I got Beckie, and also Liz and Ryan, my roommates.”

“Right! I hear about that Beckie girl all the time, are you two more than friends?”

“Jesus, Mom, can’t I mention a friend without you immediately asking if we’re going out?”

“Don’t get mad, honey.”

“I know I know,” he says in an irritated tone, “but you worrying about it doesn’t help me now, does it? I’ll find someone when I do, it’s not like I’ll just run into her out on the street.”

“I know, but—”

“Mooom, c’mon!”

“You know I say that because I love you, right?”

“I know, Mom.”

He feels like it’s the right day to wear something nicer than usual for work, in order to compensate for wearing the same style of plain clothes for the past few days and maintain a balanced appearance. He stares at his shirts for a second: blue T-shirt, green T-shirt, brown T-shirt… There it is! Purple and orange, Austria Wien T-shirt. One of his best, he’s had it since high school. Blue jeans, black sneakers, and he’s good to go. Out in the café where he gets his morning coffee, someone catches his eye. Clean-shaven, button-down shirt, ecru chinos, white shoes, golden sunglasses. He is about Tom’s age, and when the man’s wedding ring flashes in the light for a split second, Tom feels a little something in the pit of his stomach. “Never mind,” he thinks to himself, “the people who care about me most don’t care about appearances. They care about who I am on the inside.”

The calmest part of his morning walk is a few minutes away from work. The hedges to his right are flowering, and he can hear the crickets chirping and clicking from inside them. To his left, across the narrow service road, is a wide lawn surrounded by tall trees, with a pond in its center. “This is nice,” he thinks to himself, and keeps on walking to work. He gets a call from his dad; he sounds dejected.

“Tom, we have to put Messi down.”

“Why?”

“He can’t get up at all. He soiled himself completely an hour ago.”

“Alright— well…”

“Yeah…”

“He had a good life. Peaceful.”

“I’ll stay by his side until it’s over.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“Goodbye.”

He gets to the office. Connor is the first one to see him enter.

“What’s up?” he asks.

“I’m fine. Not much, I mean.”

“Are you joining us for football?”

“Like, today?”

“Yeah, we have the pitch between seven and nine o’clock.”

“No yeah, sounds good!”

“Great, we were missing a keeper.”

Connor takes a sip from his coffee mug and glances at his screen.

“Can I get your help with something?”

“Sure, what is it?”

“Printer’s out again.”

The printer refuses to take orders from at least one computer each day. Connor sends him a few pages to print out. Tom realizes he is in luck today—the printer responds to his computer without hesitation. “Happy to help,” he says when he gives Connor his pages, and goes back to his desk. He is reminiscing about Messi: sprint competitions, where he would always beat Tom by a mile. Dragging and flailing around a boxing glove tied to a rope for Messi to hunt. The way Messi would open the sliding door to the balcony with his front leg like a person, rather than with his muzzle. Such a sweet dog. He notices he’s staring at the spreadsheet on the screen in front of him. “Alright,” he thinks, “I can still work. What’s done is done.” Messi really did have a good life, carefree and tranquil. He was a good boy, but his time has come, and that’s alright; he’s been expecting this for a while now.

A few hours later he gets a text from his mom:

“How are you?” she asks.

He replies: “Did you hear about Messi?”

“Of course. He was an intelligent, loving family dog. I’ll miss him.”

He starts walking toward the exit. “He had a good life. It’s been a long time coming. Always carefree. Dad was with him.” He is almost at a running pace now. He spots the smoking zone as soon as he comes out, a little out of the way. No one is there. He heads toward it, sits down on the bench, and breaks down crying.
